Born in Butler County, Ohio, November 9, 1846, T.F. Brown was the son of Dr. N.S. and Nancy. While serving in the Civil War (71st Indiana Infantry), he was captured in Stoneman’s raid and was lucky enough to survive his time in the famed Andersonville prison. He came to Crawfordsville afterwards in order to associate medically with his uncle, Dr. Samuel G. Irwin. Susan Staley became his wife May 16, 1871. The wedding took place in Edgar County, Illinois. Dr. Brown graduated from the Indiana Eclectic College in Indianapolis and Miami Medical College. The Irwins spent time in Yountsville and Crawfordsville and eventually moved his family which included Glenn and Bert to Sanford about 1884. He served on the Vigo County Pension Board and was active in GAR affairs. His family were active members of the Methodist Church and was a Mason. He is buried in Highland Lawn Cemetery, having passed away the first day of the ninth month in the year, 1919.

Theodore F. Brown, M.D., Sandford, was born in Butler County, Ohio November 9, 1846 and is a son of Dr. Nathan S. and Nancy (Irwin) Brown, former a native of VA, latter of PA and they were of German and Scotch descent. His father was a physician, who came to Indiana 1852, settling at State Line City. Our subject, who is the eldest of a family of 5 children was reared in Centre County, Ind (?) receiving his literary education at Greencastle College, Ind and Depauw University. From school he enlisted in 1862, in the 17 Ill VI, for six months, served his term and reenlisted in Sixth Ind Cavalry, Co B he served til the close of the war. He suffered all the hardships of a soldier's life and was engaged in several battles; was wounded and taken prisoner, being held 9 months, during the most of the time in Andersonville prison. Returning home he subsequently attended Miami Medical College, at Cincinnati, where he graduated in 1868. He is a member of the Mississppi Valley Medical Association and State Medical Society of Ind; and served two years as VP of the medical association. He commenced practicing, 1st in Ill and in 1883 came to Sandford, where he has been actively engaged in the practice every since. He was united in marriage at Sandford May 16, 1867 to Miss Susan, daughter of Emanuel and Caroline (Norton) Staley. Her father and grandfather are now resident of Edgar Co, Il; her grandfather, Aaron Norton is now in his 95th year. Dr. and Mrs. Brown have two children, Glenn C and Elbert S. The doctor and his wife are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church of which he is a trustee and steward. He is a member of the Masonic fraternity and of GAR. Dr. Brown is eminently qualified for the high calling he has chosen. He was always an apt student, standing well in his studies in school and having taken a thorough course in medicine is the possessor of a diploma from two medical colleges. He ranks high as a physician in Vigo Co and has met with well-merited success at Sandford.
